Thank You Current!

Hello Current! I know it's been some time, but if you remember me my name is Caitie Bolton, aka Nettle, from the Otaku, Gaming, and US Politics pages, among others. I heard from ocanada that Current was finally going down and before the history of this community is lost, I'd like to pay my respects.

I joined in 2007 or 2008 and was a silent member for a long time. Just reading and observing. I was a very shy girl and didn't much like talking or opening up, online or in real life. After a while, I decided to join in the often heated debates and offer my own brand of geeky news entertainment. It was fun to say the least. I met so many kinds of people through this community: hardcore liberals and conservatives, hippies and military, atheists and the devout religious. It really broadened the horizons of a teenage geek living in a sheltered community and needless to say I grew with the many interactions I had. My viewpoints changed and evolved as I read and talked and explored. I went from atheist to agnostic. Decided to support the legalization of marijuana despite disliking the plant for myself. Became more aware of food safety and government policy. I don't think I could truly list everything I learned or changed in one post, so I'll just say a lot of ideas changed!

And I didn't just expand my knowledge either, I changed as a person. Interacting with other intelligent, open-minded people really brought me out of my shell. I went from a shy nerdy girl to an outgoing woman with a passion for people. I went on my first big trip by myself to New York City in 2009 with a few other key community members. I met my first boyfriend (Current89) on Current as well, and that was a huge step for me. Up until then I hadn't had any luck with relationships and it opened up a big adventurous door for me! In late 2009 the community of friends I had grown used to started to fall apart and I lost interest. I stayed in touch with people I met from Current, but couldn't drum up the enthusiasm to keep posting news and content.

I went on to found an anime club at my college that strives to bring together people with geeky interests so that folks can make friends. It worked with amazing success and has given me the skills to be outgoing and plan events like a pro. I even founded an anime and pop culture convention that's another free opportunity for fun to be had. Our group won Student Organization of the Year just a month ago and we've been showered with praise from the college administration and members. The above picture is a group photo with about a third of the active membership at a thank you party we hosted just a couple days ago. I'm second to the left on the bottom having a blast and happier than I can convey!

Yeah, I'm bragging a bit, but without the self-confidence and courage that the Current community instilled in me, I wouldn't have been able to accomplish any of this. I wouldn't have made any of the amazing friends I have today either. I'm so lucky to have the life I have right now and it all started with Current's amazing people and the flourishing community I remember.

So thank you Current for guiding me to be the person I am today. I'm proud of you and proud to have been a part. You will be missed, but always cherished. Thank you.

Love,
Caitie
